Irish Draught Breed Type Gallery
Examples of Irish Draught horses that meet the Irish Draught Breed Standard. You will notice variation in the types below but all of these horses share the following classic Irish Draught characteristics: the frame is rectangular, the proportion of body-depth to leg-length is 50:50, the thoracic/girth area is deep, the loin-hip-thigh-gaskin complex is strong, and the shin/cannon bone region of the limb below the knee is substantial in circumference, short in length, and "flat" (ie. significantly broader in side view than front view with the tendons and ligaments well defined, and the line of the tendons parallel to the line of the front of the cannon bone). A good Irish Draught may be more heavy framed (aka the "strong" type) or they may be lighter framed (aka the "quality" type), but they all should be "half body, half leg" with short, substantial flat cannons and powerful hindquarters. Compare these photos of purebred Irish Draughts to the classic Thoroughbred and the modern Continental Warmblood at the bottom of the page.
